The essays gathered here focus on four different aspects: playing spaces, repertory, play-types, and performance style, beginning with essays devoted to touring conditions, performances in university towns, London inns and theatres, and the patronage system under Queen Elizabeth. Repertory studies, unique to this volume, consider the elements of the company's distinctive style, and how this style may have influenced, for example, Shakespeare's Henry V. Contributors explore two distinct genres, the morality and the history play, especially focussing on the use of stock characters and on male/female relationships.
Revising standard accounts of late Elizabeth theatre history, this collection shows that the Queen's Men, often understood as the last rear-guard of the old theatre, were a vital force that enjoyed continued success in the provinces and in London, representative of the abiding appeal of an older, more ostentatiously theatrical form of drama.

Almost two hundred years ago, the territory that would become Alabama was both ancient homeland and new frontier where a complex network of allegiances and agendas was playing out. The fabric of that network stretched and frayed as the Creek Civil War of 1813-14 pitted a faction of the Creek nation known as Red Sticks against those Creeks who supported the Creek National Council. The war began in July 1813, when Red Stick rebels were attacked near Burnt Corn Creek by Mississippi militia and settlers from the Tensaw area in a vain attempt to keep the Red Sticks’ ammunition from reaching the main body of disaffected warriors. A retaliatory strike against a fortified settlement owned by Samuel Mims, now called Fort Mims, was a Red Stick victory. The brutality of the assault, in which 250 people were killed, outraged the American public and “ Remember Fort Mims” became a national rallying cry.

During the American-British War of 1812, Americans quickly joined the war against the Red Sticks, turning the civil war into a military campaign designed to destroy Creek power. The battles of the Red Sticks have become part of Alabama and American legend and include the famous Canoe Fight, the Battle of Holy Ground, and most significantly, the Battle of Tohopeka (also known as Horseshoe Bend)— the final great battle of the war. There, an American army crushed Creek resistance and made a national hero of Andrew Jackson.

New attention to material culture and documentary and archaeological records fills in details, adds new information, and helps disabuse the reader of outdated interpretations.

Understanding the Creek War

Two or three years ago there was a Creek War / War of 1812 symposium held at Auburn University. I watched some of it on-line. I was only able to catch a few of the talks due to a poor quality computer connection. There was talk about putting the conference on a dvd, and I was disappointed when I did not see it. But now I have something even better, with all the references. The book containing all the papers from the symposium, with the sources and references they used is much better.

This book can be compared to a whole college study course about the Creek War. A dozen different papers on different aspects of the war, from the best professors and writers on the subject. I have books and papers by several of these people, and even know a few of them rather well. And for the bicentennial of the war, rethinking and reexamining the war is exactly what they do. Included are perspective of the Creek descendants themselves, with views from Ted Isham of the Muscogee Creek Nation, and Robert Thrower of the Poarch Creek Band.

Authors of the various chapters are ones you probably know if you have any books on the Creek War, and you probably have a book or two written by them. Kathryn Holland Braund who wrote "Deerskins and Duffles: Creek Indian Trade with Anglo America, 1685-1815" and who has recently reprinted works of William Bartram and James Adair. David and Jeanne Heidler who wrote, "Old Hickory's War: Andrew Jackson and the Quest for Empire."

The 1813-1814 Creek War has always bothered me, and I always felt as if I was missing a few pieces of the puzzle. I have visited Fort Mims and Horseshoe Bend, and read a number of biographies on both William Weatherford and Andrew Jackson. I even worked at one of these War of 1812 sites for almost three years. But I have always been bothered by this war in Alabama that lasted only 7 or 8 months but killed and displaced thousands of people. Both the Red Sticks and the US Army & state militias had no problem with wiping out whole communities and killing the women and children. I really needed to understand beyond Fort Mims or Horseshoe Bend.

And this is the book has helped me understand, by looking at several factors and influences that went into the 1813-1814 Creek War. Also by revisiting the original papers and accounts. The clash of cultures that preceded the war are examined. Tecumseh's visit to Tuckabatchee, and if it really made a difference or not with the Red Sticks who were already working on the uprising. The view of the settlers of the early 19th century, who wanted the land and believed that the only way to solve conflicts with the Indians was to either totally remove them, or wipe them out.

My personal favorite chapter was "'A Packet from Canada': Telling Conspiracy Stories on the 1813 Creek Frontier" by Robert P. Collins. It examines the months prior to the war of the rumor of a supposed letter of support the Red Sticks had from the British. Was there really a letter? What happened when the Red Sticks tried to get arms in Spanish Pensacola, and what really happened at Burnt Corn Creek and how many warriors were actually there?

The American Army was poorly trained and supplied, and it is a wonder that they accomplished anything. Supply lines were scarce, desertions were high, and the only way they kept it together was by the dominating will of Jackson. There was no communication between forces, but they managed to destroy 60 Creek towns in Alabama.

Towards the end of the book is an examination of the archaeology of Creek War sites. Why they are so hard to find, with little remaining artifacts, and why they are so difficult to tell apart between Creek and settler sites.

The appendix of the book has a list of all the related Creek War sites, including Creek villages, forts, settlements, temporary camps, and burned houses. Only a handful of these sites are preserved today. A few more have been surveyed but remain closed to the public and in private hands. But the majority of these sites remained lost in time and still hidden in the ground.

This book is a welcome addition to my library of books on the Creek War. (And I have many.) I am not sure if I will need any new ones after this.

Invaluable for my work

This topic is one of extreme interest to me, and I love Braund. I found it to be very edifying, as research for a book I'm writing. This war is a critical part of my story and this look at it provided new insights I found to be invaluable.

About the Author
Lucy Le-Guilcher received her PhD from the University of Cambridge, where she wrote a thesis entitled Style and Women's Writing, 1940s and 1950s. She is the author of two books on Elizabeth Bowen, British Women Writers of World War II, Colonial Strangers, Anglo-Jewish Women Writing the Holocaust, and many articles on women writers. She serves as Co-President of The Space Between Society: Literature and Culture 1914-1945.

Love this book but what a price!!!

This is one of my favorite books and I was hoping it would be available on Kindle but the price is absolutely ridiculous! As the other reviewer stated I would never pay such a high price for a book. I am sure there is a cost in making a book available through Kindle but to expect people to pay such an outrageous price is truly disgusting.

That being said this book is very well written and the characters interesting. Following the lead character through her late life entry into the religious community with all the adjustments and changes it makes to her life and the people she comes in contact with makes as interesting story.

Eighty Dollars for an Electronic Title?

There must be a way to get that price down. I have purchased this book as a real hard copy book, in hard cover for $10.00 plus shipping!

I love the book! I have read it and re-read it, and it is a book that, if I want something to read, I will pick it up again, rather than facing a new, untried author. It should be on the required reading list for every monastic novice, or even anyone remotely considering a vocation in monasticism. The characters are real, flesh-and-blood people. The situations are true, and there are constant reminders that God does provide, even when I am down to sixty-five cents in my checking account and I still have a week before I get my Social Security payment for the month.

But! There is no way that I am going to pay $80.00 for an electronic title! Nope, not going to happen! If I am going to spend that type of money on a book it will be something with hand illuminations, gold leaf, and fancy calligraphy. Now I did spend just slightly above $80 for a book once, but that was a printing and binding of my own work, and it had a fancy leather binding and acid free paper.

All in all, buy the book as a hard copy, and stay away from this electronic book.

You must be joking!!!

I first read this book more than 30 years ago and I own a paperback copy and have read it again many times over the years so I wanted to read again on Kindle since Im older I like thd convenience of the Kindle's portability and Iarger font. Imagine my shock when I saw the price! Surely this is a mistake. Its more expensive than most higher end coffee table books. Thd persons who own Rumer Godden's publishing rights must be confusing a digital copy with a signed first edition of the book. I guess Im reading my paperback again or maybe sell it??!! Hmmmm......

Original y diferente relato sobre Alejandro Magno.

Cameron relata sobre Alejandro Magno de diferente manera a la que uno lee de otros libros.aspectos positivos a destacar son su diferente visión que tiene sobre Alejandro Magno donde lo desmitifica. A pesar de considerarlo una especie de Dios, lo toma como una persona también. A medida que va avanzando la historia, van apareciendo defectos de su carácter que los relatos conocidos lo consideran como virtudes.
El libro puede dividirse en tres partes:niñez y juventud es decir hasta la muerte de Filipo, la conquista de Persepolis y su muerte.
Lo negativo es su prosa pesada y lenta y que la historia esta contada por Ptolomeo y desde su óptica. También no son atractivos los relatos de las batallas y podría haber sido más extensa la historia posterior a la conquista de Tiro. Es muy extensa la descripción de la primera parte de su vida abarcando casi la mitad del libro hasta la muerte de Filipo.

Not my favorite Cameron novel but as with all of his other books, this is a must read for lovers of historically accurate fiction and detail and especially of Christian Cameron. Alexander is a difficult character to write about in a fictional novel because so much has been done on the subject and on his life. The author does a very creditable job of weaving his perceprtion of Alexander's personality into known historic facts which I believe comes closer to defining who Alexander was as a real perwson than any other author I've read. A must read for Cameron fans.

About the Author
Bob Pease is Chair of Social Work in the School of Health and Social Development at Deakin University in Geelong, Australia. His most recent co-edited books are the International Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities (Routledge 2007), Migrant Men: Critical Studies of Masculinities and the Migration Experience (Routledge 2009) and Critical Social Work: Theories and Practices for a Socially Just World (Allen and Unwin 2nd edition 2009). He has been involved in profeminist masculinity politics for many years and actively engaged in campaigns to end men's violence against women.

Undoing the harm of blind privilege

Excellent insight into the issue of privilege, especially blind privilege, across economic, racial, class, gender, geographic lines. Pease presents a compelling argument that privilege is not a one size fits all. Since almost everyone can find him/herself in the minority depending on the situation, everyone has the capacity for empathy for and the responsibility to use that understanding to undo harm to others when in the position of being privileged. The emphasis of Pease's book is on Undoing Privilege biases. THe book is a rich resource and in fact is used as a text for college courses that are examining this issue. .
